This magical island is the jewel in Cornwall's crown, a national treasure and a must for every visitor to the far West of England.In 1954 Lord St Levan made a gift of St Michael's Mount -
together with a large endowment to the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty.
The family retained a lease for part of the castle, garden and grounds while safely preserving the Mount for the future in the care of the National Trust. Originally the site of a Benedictine priory and approached by a causeway at low tide (and ferry boats at high tide – weather permitting), the dramatic castle on top of this famous rocky island dates from the 12th century. It was converted into a private house in the 17th century and contains fascinating early rooms, an armoury, a rococo Gothic drawing room and, at the highest point, a 14th-century church. There are magnificent views towards Land’s End and The Lizard Comments
