The earliest inhabitants of the area were nomadic Native Americans who followed herds of animals and gathered wild plants. The Ancestral Puebloans, formerly known as the Anasazi, inhabited the southern reaches of the San Juan National Forest. The San Juan National Forest was created by presidential proclamation on June 3, 1905, On March 2, 1907 the area was further enlarged and included as a part of what is now the Rio Grande National Forest. On July 1, 1908, the Forest was divided into two Forests - the San Juan, with headquarters in Pagosa Springs, and the Durango, with headquarters in Durango. The two forests were combined with the Montezuma National Forest in 1947 to form the present San Juan National Forest, with headquarters in Durango. Comments
